Obituary for BARBARA L. BROWN

BARBARA L. BROWN
“Barbara L. Brown was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 29, 1923. As a child, she moved to Los Angeles, California where she completed elementary and secondary school. She loved children, helping people and spending time outdoors. She moved to Compton, California in 1956 and went to work for Saint Timothy’s Day School and later Compton Unified School District until she retired in June 1985. She belonged to the Altar Guild and ECW School Board Vestry and Manor Board affiliated with Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church.

Barbara had three sons and an honorary daughter: La Mont Brown, Randell Brown, Marlena Singh, and her son, Larry Brown, who preceded her in death. Barbara is also survived by nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren along with a host of friends and family. She died peacefully at her home in Compton, California on April 9, 2018, surrounded by her family.”

Barbara Brown, known affectionately as “Mama Brown,” was a universal mother who knew no stranger. She was a devoted wife and mother, as well as a teacher and counselor who loved children. With her faithful, loving, humorous spirit, she brought peace and joy to all those who knew her.

Barbara’s home in Compton, California was known as, The Sunshine Mission, as she would welcome anyone in need of shelter from the storms that life can bring. Warm, open, accepting and multicultural, Barbara would generously share her kindness with everyone she encountered.

Barbara was a longtime member of Saint Timothy’s church and an active member of her community. Barbara loved traveling, teaching, spending time outdoors and spending time with her loved ones. Surrounded by her loving family, Barbara passed away peacefully at her home on April 9, 2018.

All are welcome to celebrate the life of Barbara with her family and friends: Wake, Thursday, April 19, 2018, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Woods-Valentines Mortuary 1455 N.
