Herman Fitzherbert Davis, M.D.
Herman Fitzherbert Davis passed away Saturday July 28th, 2018 at 10:30pm at St. Rose Dominican Hospital Sienna in Henderson, Nevada. He was the first of 4 brothers and 1 sister born to Clarence Rupert Davis and Sophia Keturah Davis, née Newton on 12 March, 1926 in Georgetown, Guyana.
Herman was a professor at Teacher’s College in Georgetown Guyana where he earned the nickname ‘the preacher’. On New Year’s Day 1952 he arrived in New York City to start his life in the United States where he became a citizen in 1966. While in New York he resided in Brooklyn where he worked and saved money to attend graduate school. He secured a position as a student teacher and lab monitor in a chemistry lab at Lincoln University in Chicago Illinois. In Chicago he met and later married Florence Cunningham in 1957. He loved and excelled in chemistry and was recommended to Howard University Medical school by his professors. He was accepted as a first-year medical student at Howard University in 1955 and graduated from the medical program in 1959. He then did internships in Michigan, Colorado and finally interning in California. In 1962 he completed his internships and heading to Altadena, California where with the help of friends from ‘back home’ set up his medical practice as an internist with a specialty in cardiology. His practice was located in the Lake Avenue Professional Building at 2333 North Lake in Altadena where he served the Altadena community for over 40 years prior to his retirement in 2000.
Herman delighted in traveling with his family and had a very adventurous spirit. He loved visiting, trying new foods and learning about new cultures. He was an avid filmmaker and then videographer of the places he visited which included countries on almost every continent including India, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, China, Russia, Egypt, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Kenya and much of continental Europe and Mexico. When he was not serving on call doing rounds over the weekends for the local hospitals in Altadena and Pasadena he could be found RV camping with his family. From the beaches, deserts, mountains and farmlands he loved exploring new parts of California and Mexico making campfires, setting up a hammock amidst the trees for an out of door nap.
Herman was active in two men’s social and philanthropic groups that included the Gamma Zeta Boule chapter in Altadena/Pasadena and the Kiwanis Club of greater Pasadena.
